John Robbins may not have fully intended his book, Diet for a New America, to be a diet guide, but it surely did convince a good number of people to opt for the healthier, eco-friendlier, and more humane lifestyle–Veganism.
The start of the book itself is very moving. John Robbins, being the heir to the world’s largest ice cream company, Baskin-Robbins, have decided to renounce all of that privilege and take part on saving the world by living the vegan way.
As the book is divided into three sections, slowing enlightening the readers into switching their lifestyles, Robbins started with how animals are being treated daily. It tells of how the meat industry is the cruelest trade with what it does to the poor animals who are robbed of their rights and respect. He also tells of how intelligent and loving creatures animals are with his accounts of children’s encounters with animals, and other stories these creatures have saved human lives.
Then, Robbins proceeded to how eating animals is unhealthy which he proved through investigative reporting and a good deal of scientific facts you just cannot ignore. Here, he introduces his alternative, vegetarianism as the optimal diet, further proven by historical and scientific evidences, like how human teeth is flat making it more capable to consume plants and fruits, and even how meat diets cause illnesses and even death. Although the book did strongly suggest changing to a vegan diet and lifestyle, it did not give out recipes you would need for the shift as the vegan cookbook only came years later after another book was published.
Well, being a vegan, or even just a vegetarian, is really a big step. Thinking of it, it might even be a bigger decision than subscribing to a weight-loss diet. It also needs great determination and commitment to pull off. However, it is still a very wise move, since it will be much like hitting two birds with a single stone, you get to stay healthy and take part in saving the world, too. Now that really is something worth doing.
