Recovery Man by Kristine Kathryn Rusch is a high-tech detective story, number six in the “Retrieval Artist” series. It combines hard science fiction, a complex whodunit plot and a fascinating look at alien bureaucracy. All the elements for an entertaining read are here.
Rhonda Shindo and her daughter Talia live on Jupiter’s moon Callisto. Rhonda works for the Aleyd Corporation and is blamed for a failed experiment that killed hundreds of Gyonnese larvae. She comes home from work and walks into a trap. Recovery Man, Hadad Yu, a glorified bounty hunter, locked Talia in a closet and abducts Rhonda at her front door. She is to be turned over to the alien Gyonnese as payback. Meanwhile Talia discovers that she is really a clone of Rhonda’s real daughter and she faces a confusing custody battle. Authorities begin a massive search for Rhonda, but her ex-husband, Miles Flint, is conducting his own investigation. And every trail leads back to Aleyd and the old crime that could change Talia’s life forever.
This is another engrossing chapter for fans. It can stand alone but if you want a better understanding of the world and the character of Miles Flint start at beginning. Rusch is a great storyteller with the ability to hold a reader’s attention from start to finish. Miles plays a smaller role in this book but we find out more about why he became a retrieval artist. All the characters are well drawn and have frailties and flaws that make them believable. The scientific theory is credible and the settings feel real. I highly recommend the series.
