Martin Avis book entitled “effective time management skills for everyone” with the interesting subtitle of “getting things done: how to stop destination and work smart and relieve stress in just 14 days” is tempting enough to get you from reading the book Martin Avis is a former business consultant from the advertising agencies and is now a full-time Internet marketeer making its money from newsletters and teaching up to the same.
In the opening introduction of the book the first line is “this book will change your life” this is a very bold statement and one that I was interested to see if Martin’s book would live up to.
I have over the past 14 days read Martin’s book which is full of simple tips and strategies on time management and had to improve yours. Does it live up to the first line and changed my life?
Well the simple answer must be yes and I guess that would mean that the same would apply to most readers who are prepared to try and apply the principles contained in the book. I think to get the most from it you need to read through it over a 14 day period take and apply the time management strategies that you think will work best and at some point in the future come back and spend another 14 days and see which other tips you would like to try.
I won’t go into any of the tips and steel Martin’s thunder but I’ll save it there is approximately 4 tips per day some of which I had come across before some of which I hadn’t, so I thought were useful in some definitely thought they were not for me.
The techniques for time management really started with picking one strategy that was on day one selection and then a lot of the others that I picked up a daily basis were building on that strategy and it is was about a method of being disciplined in the application of the time and prioritising it. Obviously a lot of books on time management concentrate on goal setting and to-do lists and prioritising those, Martin’s book whilst covering these also throws in lots of other methods.
I will at some time in the future try some of the techniques that really didn’t seem that useful all that they could possibly work, just to see what happens.
If you order Martin’s book could be disappointed when you receive it in that it is not as big as I anticipated the price however the content is plentiful and benefits from the fact that it is without padding.
Would I recommend you buy the book? The answer is yes if you are prepared to put some effort and investment into yourself and work through a full 14 days applying an additional strategy each day. I would comment that it would be useful if on day one you write down what changes you make and then update the list each day as it is in its very difficult to keep track! If you want some magic formula which is going to prove your time efficiency no end and not out of any work than the book is not for you.
There is a day by day diary of my thoughts on my blog if anyone wants to read further.
