Book Review - The Shack by William P Young

OK, so I am done with The Shack – do not misunderstand, I did not finish reading it, I am simply done with it.

I found the beginning quite compelling to read, hooking me right into the story. The presentation of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit was interesting and thought-provoking. Bringing a personality to each of the persons in the Trinity is a difficult thing to do, most people have in their mind how to perceive them. This author did a wonderful job in showing them as three distinct personalities – with characteristics that challenge common thoughts and mental images of them.

But, by the time I was about halfway through, I found it to be very preachy. It seemed to me that the author took a long time to say very little as he stretched it to a book-length novel. I know that it has sold a bunch of copies – and many people will disagree with me. It lost me at the halfway mark and I just couldn’t finish it. Though I found no issues with the picture of what happened at the Shack or the theology as it was described, I felt it lost its thrill partway through.

I have too many books on my reading list to force my way through it just to say I read the whole thing. So, I have closed The Shack.

Many people have claimed this book impacted their lives tremendously, if you are looking for a life-changing book, this might do it for you. It just didn’t do that for me.
