Did President Obama Side With Israel's Enemies?

In his Middle East address this week, President Obama called Israel to return to the 1967 borders. Unfortunately, these borders are indefensible, which means that if Israel did heed this call, the nation would be set up for terrorist extermination. In fact, what keeps its terrorist attacks down is its military presence in the West Bank. But guess what? In his speech, the president also called for Israel to withdraw its forces from the West Bank.

Ironically, the president stated that negotiations should begin with territory and security. However, his plan (which will likely be accompanied by pressure on Israel to submit to it) would remove Israel’s security. In fact, the call for Israel to withdraw to the 1967 borders (which, in reality, would be the pre-June 1967 borders, or the 1949 armistice borders), he seeks to bring the Jewish nation into what some have been termed “Auschwitz borders,” referring to the infamous concentration camp. In other words, as mentioned above, these borders would set up Israel for elimination.

In taking this stance, the president has aligned himself with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who is no friend of Israel. However, in calling for a “full and phased withdraw of Israeli forces” from “occupied Palestinian lands,” he is putting a smile on the faces of Hamas leaders, as it has been Israel’s military presence that has, thus far, prevented Hamas from overtaking the West Bank. If Hamas would, in fact, overtake the West Bank at a point in which Israel is moved back to the 1949 borders (which would involve a land mass less than what was originally dispensed to the Jewish nation in 1948), every city in the Jewish nation would be within rocket attack. At that point, the entire country would be living in fear-every minute of every day.

This is truly a sad day for Israel, but, unfortunately, it is just as sad for the United States. The reason for that is because God has promised to bring trouble upon those who bring trouble upon Israel (see Genesis 12:3). Based upon the president’s speech, the U.S. should plan for much trouble ahead.

Fortunately, God will prevent Israeli leadership from falling into the trap of acquiescing to the president’s insane plan. How do we know that? It is because the Bible tells us that, as part of the end-times treaty-the seven-year covenant that will begin the final seven years leading to the return of Christ (see Daniel 9:24-27; also see Apocalypse 2012: The Ticking of the End Times Clock-What Does the Bible Say? for a detailed explanation of this treaty) – Israel will be granted permission to rebuild the Jewish temple on the Temple Mount. We know that for at least three reasons.

First, Daniel 9:27 shows the interconnectedness of the rebuilt temple with the final, seven-year treaty by revealing that when that treaty is broken (in the middle of the seven-year period), there will be “an end of sacrifice and offering”. Israel cannot have “sacrifice and offering” without a temple (which is why Jews have not been able to offer up sacrifices to God since A.D. 70); thus, the temple will be rebuilt prior to the mid-point of that final seven-year era.

Second, in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, the apostle Paul reveals that “the man of sin”-the future end-times character (called “the beast” in the book of Revelation) unveiled at the mid-point of that future, seven-year period-will enter into the Jewish temple to proclaim himself as god to be worshipped. Thus, this passage also shows a rebuilt temple within the first three and a half years following the signing of the seven-year treaty.

Third, the Lord Jesus also reveals that the temple will be rebuilt prior to the mid-point of that seven-year era. For in Matthew 24:15, He warns that “the abomination of desolation” will take place when the “desolator” stands in “the holy place,” which is the temple. This “abomination of desolation,” also mentioned in the book of Daniel, will occur three and a half years following the initiation of the end-times treaty.

So why does the rebuilt Jewish temple indicate that Israel will not withdraw to the 1949 borders? No Jewish individual longing for the rebuilt temple would even think of allowing it to be rebuilt anywhere but where the first two temples have been built, which is on the Temple Mount. In addition, this rebuilt temple is called “the temple of God” in 2 Thessalonians 2:4, indicating it will be built on the same site (the Temple Mount) where God’s temple previously existed and where Abraham was called to offer up his son Isaac (and where God provided a substitute offering for Isaac, typifying the substitutionary atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ)-a truly holy site.

The Temple Mount is outside of the pre-June 1967 borders. It resides in East Jerusalem, which is the place President Obama is proposing (in deference to Yassir Arafat) as the capital of a new Palestinian state. Certainly, then, if Israel were to withdraw to the borders being proposed by the U.S. president, the Jews would not hold onto East Jerusalem or the Temple Mount.

So, God will not allow Israeli leadership to submit to President Obama’s proposition; for His plan for Israel is much different than that of the president’s stratagem. However, while Israel will fortunately escape the consequences of that insane proposal, unfortunately, the U.S. will not. As nations have experienced in past history, leaders’ decisions to bring trouble to Israel result in trouble for the entire country.

Thus, this is one decision that will backfire on the president-and on the nation. Watch in the days ahead to see what consequences will transpire. We already know that the U.S. is not found in Bible prophecy (indicating that it will have stepped far away from Israel, which is at the center of the prophetic picture, by that point)-most likely due to decisions such as this plan by the president; however, this alignment with Israel’s enemies will undoubtedly bring greater consequences than that. We will see.

Review - Diary: Alone on Earth

Diary: Alone on Earth, JD Weldy, 2011, B005W3NACK (Kindle e-book)

It’s normal to wonder what it would be like to be the last person on earth. That is, until it actually happens.

David is a senior citizen who has reasons for wanting to cut himself off from the rest of the world. He finds an isolated house outside of a small town in Alabama, where he plans to spend the rest of his days with his faithful dog, Ralph. One day, the whole world is menaced a strange humming sound. The media is full of speculation as to the cause. Several hundred people are driven to suicide, including one of David’s neighbors. Countries are ready for war, convinced that their “enemy” is about to attack. David goes to bed.

The next morning David wakes up to no electricity, and no battery power, either. Even new, freshly charged batteries are dead. David travels to the houses of his neighbors, to find them deserted. He visits the small town, a place called Axis, to find it also deserted. He finds a motorcycle that he can push start, and visits Mobile, Alabama. He finds hundreds and hundreds of abandoned, burning cars, like people were in a panic. But there are no people, not even dead bodies. He finds the same thing in Atlanta, along with signs that people tried very hard keep something out, or in.

The book turns into something of a psychological battle between David and a being that he calls The Blackness. David feels that it wants him dead, but it can’t kill him, so it torments him constantly. David hears Ralph barking, but no matter how much he calls out to Ralph, he doesn’t come. David also hears voices that he should recognize. David and The Blackness meet late in the book (think “demon from hell”). David decides to travel west to keep looking for any other people. For some reason, he feels that answers will be found at the end of Interstate 90, in the town of Van Horn, Texas. As he travels, with The Blackness making it as hard as possible, David has to maneuver around thousands and thousands of smashed and burning cars, but still no people. Does David reach the end of his journey? Does he discover what happened to mankind?

Told all in diary form, this is a really interesting suspense story. It does a very good job of showing the despair that will set in after the “novelty” wears off, including the wondering if God would really let such a thing happen to His people. It is very much worth reading.

3 Steps to a Closer Walk With Jesus

Many people wish for a better life in Christ. You may be surprised to find it is closer than you think. To be honest, just to simply share what gives me a close relationship with Jesus my Lord, is what I am writing this short article about. If I had to look at what made my faith strong this is what I would come up with.

Step 1 – The Living Word

Many people when they talk about steps to be closer to the Lord speak about having a regular relationship with the Word of God. I don’t think it is a matter of how much of the Word of God you know, it’s a matter of how much is living inside of you. Any person can quote the verse in Isaiah 53 that says, “By His Stripes you are healed” but a person that has that verse living inside of them is an actual healer that can be used to heal people.

We need more than the written Word, we need to have full revelation of the Word and believe in it with all our heart. A good relationship with Jesus comes with real revelation of scriptures in our heart. Only with living Word in our hearts can we fight the enemy. It takes a relationship with the Holy Spirit for the Word to become living within you, and I pray that this might happen for you.

Step 2 – A Two way conversational prayer life with Jesus

In the parable of the Good Shepherd Jesus says that His sheep know His voice and he speaks to them and they follow Him. It is an important part of your spiritual walk with Jesus to be able to hear Him speak to you. Some people reading this may scoff and think that only a mystic of prophet can hear from Jesus, but the parable of the Good Shepherd says otherwise.

Being able to pray and then listen to Jesus as He speaks to you is vital for a close walk with Jesus. Just as the living word is important to your spiritual walk so is a two way speaking relationship with Jesus. Many people have a great Christian life without speaking to Jesus but we are talking about having a closer walk with Jesus.

Step 3 – Obedience

When you have a two way conversational relationship with Jesus he will tell you things that He wants you to do. Added to that we have the commands of Jesus that exist in the gospels that we need to obey. You cannot have an abiding relationship with Jesus without obedience.

I feel these three steps will bring many people closer to Jesus. We could mention faith, humility, loving your neighbour and other things, but getting these three accomplished will have your relationship improve out of sight.

Obstacles Welcome by Ralph De La Vega

Obstacles Welcome is Ralph de la Vega’s story. Part biography and part self-help book, it’s all about his inspiring journey to achieve the American Dream. He opens up his life to readers and grants them access to his experiences. He willingly shares what he’s learned as he faced and overcame life’s challenges to achieve success and climb the corporate ladder to become the president and CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets.

It was 1962 and Ralph de la Vega was ten years old. He and his family were waiting to board a plane at the Havana Airport in Cuba. They had been approved to leave and they were flying to Miami. Airport officials told them there were irregularities with their documents and only Ralph could leave. The decision was made. Ralph would still go. Miraculously they were able to reach friends in the States who agreed to care for him. A few days turned into four years before Ralph saw his family again. Ralph has come a long way since then and he decided to write this book because so many people have been moved by his personal saga.

I enjoyed the chapters on the author’s personal life. Black and white photos of his family are included. I’m not a business person and I found myself skimming some of the chapters that focused on his corporate life. There is a lot of detail about author’s work in telecommunications and the AT&T and Cingular Merger but anyone interested in business will not be bored. The book is an easy read and provides a behind the scenes look at business. The lessons can be applied to other types of work and makes this a valuable tool for anyone who wants to learn or teach leadership principles.

When you are seeking self-improvement, you will definitely want to add entries to journal. It becomes less likely that you will skip out on making journal entries when a very well produced bound leather journal is looking at you from your desk. The presence of the serious nature of making additions to the journal is a good thing because there are many benefits you can gain by keeping a journal.

A journal is more than a document of a life that has been lived. It can also include the following components:

A journal should be used to document your goals and to keep track of your progress with meeting your goals. Interview With Drew Silver, Author of "The Vampire Within - New Blood"

Drew Silver has been a huge fan of the classic vampire story since she saw the original Dracula movie starring Bela Lugosi. Inspired by observing the similarities between human lives and those of vampires, Silver’s Vampire trilogy was born. Silver holds a Criminal Justice Degree and has worked in law enforcement. She has also spent over twenty years studying the martial arts and mastering various weapons that come to play in the second and third novels of her vampire trilogy.

Tyler: Thank you for joining me today, Drew. To begin, I’m always intrigued when authors write a series of novels. Did you set out intending to write a trilogy, and if so, did you write all three novels before publishing, or did you finish the first, publish it, and then move onto the next?

Drew: From the start, I knew “The Vampire Within” would be a trilogy. To do otherwise, would have betrayed the characters and intricate storyline. I finished and published each novel at pivotal moments in order for the reader to absorb what had just happened to the characters and determine if they would have made the same choices.

Tyler: Would you tell us a little bit about what happened in the first novel, and where “New Blood” picks up from it?

Drew: In “The Vampire Within: The Beginning,” a group of college students are lured into participating in a University-sponsored research project that promises to cure ailments, enhance athletic performance, and make one more physically attractive with a mere series of injections. The students are divided into two groups, one controlled and the other experimental. What none of the students are aware of is that those promises are side effects of becoming a vampire. “New Blood” picks up after the “control” group learns they have also been given the genetically-altered vampire serum and must take the rest of it to keep from dying either by the serum coursing through their veins or the evil hunting them.

Tyler: I understand the setting for “New Blood,” Triton, California, appears to be a model town, especially lacking in homeless people, but that there is a sinister reason why the homeless are not around. Would you explain that reason to us?

Drew: The homeless are a mostly unaccounted part of society. There are many who have no family or friends who keep tabs on them. There are others who suffer from many different mental ailments including hallucinations. If a certain species needed human blood to thrive on, this would be a feasible group initially to prey upon. First, no one would believe them if they stated vampires were attacking them and second, who would notice that they were missing?

Living in San Diego, we have quite a few homeless… I’m sure it’s because of our mild winters and infrequent rainfall. If one of the homeless disappeared, another would take his or her place. It would take a substantial decrease to get the public’s attention. A comparable group is prostitutes … I think it’s why some serial killers target them. They’re easy prey considering they are willing to get into a stranger’s car just to make a few dollars.

Tyler: I am intrigued by your decision to have the characters become vampires through scientific testing rather than just a vampire going around turning others into vampires. Why did you choose to have the vampires be the result of scientific efforts?

Drew: There are already so many stories in circulation about the traditional means of being ‘turned’ into a vampire. I felt it was time to update the story with a new way of transmitting the vampire curse. Like so many diseases that are passed on through unprotected sex, swapping needles, etc. having the vampire serum injected intravenously into the majority of characters by a trusted source seemed more believable and more sinister.

Tyler: The vampire novel has been popular in English literature for two hundred years now, yet several vampire novels are produced each year. In your novel, you focus on genetic engineering. Is it because the vampire genre lends itself to commentary on modern day issues that it has survived?

Drew: The vampire is only a myth because we haven’t found anything to prove otherwise. Yet, there are those who have what is called Xeroderma pigmentosum or XP, who can’t go outside because pain and blistering occur immediately after contact with sunlight. There are others who believe they are actually vampires–they have what is called Clinical Vampirism. There are many other similarities that link the two worlds, including the quest for eternal youth, which present-day scientists are trying to zero in on. Vampires are a unique reflection of everything we fear and simultaneously, everything we want to be.

Tyler: Drew, what makes your vampire novels stand out from all the others, including the very popular novels of Anne Rice?

Drew: This trilogy just doesn’t bring what we know as vampires to modern day, it transforms them. Staying true to the “survival of the fittest” theory, Dr. Cohn, the ultimate nemesis in the story, uses his expertise in genetic engineering to manipulate the DNA recovered from vampire remains and to test the effects on unsuspecting students. The students are forced to decide whether to allow the vampire within them to consume them or use the vampire within to wage war against the evil that has been unleashed in their city.

Tyler: Are you personally interested in genetic engineering itself? Often, horror novels are seen as social criticism? Were you trying to say something similar here about the potential dangers of science?

Drew: I think genetic engineering should always be respected and that no one has the right to play God. In “The Vampire Within” trilogy, the students are lured into participating in a research project that promises them god-like results such as increased stamina, better eye sight, and eliminating the effects of asthma. Our society already has made great advances in increasing stamina, correcting vision with lasers, and having more effective asthma inhalers. The simple truth is that most of us desire more and more. If we acquire better vision or a faster internet connection, we are rarely satisfied for long and search for the next best thing. If you want examples, just turn on the television. “The Vampire Within” shows what happens when these students sign up for a get-fixed quick experiment and find that dealing with their physical limitations was much more appealing than stepping onto the other side of the proverbial fence which had promised greener pastures.

Tyler: Why did you choose the title “The Vampire Within” for your trilogy? Are you suggesting we all have a bit of the vampire within us?

Drew: Yes, I do think we all have a little bit of a vampire within us in the regard we share some of the basic characteristics of vampires. We all want to live forever, in a youthful way–not experience the effects of old age. If we had a chance to live forever, be beautiful forever, and perhaps powerful and wealthy forever, would any of us pass it up? I don’t think any of us could answer it truthfully until put in the situation.

Tyler: Of course, there are negative effects to being a vampire–if not for the vampire, for other people. The characters in your story did not choose to be vampires, but were tricked into it through the scientific study. But do you think people would choose to be vampires in exchange for eternal life and youth?

Drew: I think it comes down to what’s worth selling your soul for. For example, the leader of the good group of vampires turns out to be Justin Monroe. He’s been tricked into taking the first injection and he’s given the choice to live or die. Of course if I were put in his situation, I would have made the same choice to become a vampire. He’s doing it for all the right reasons–to be with the woman he loves, to protect his family, and hopefully to save Triton City and perhaps the world from the diabolical plan that Dr. Cohn has put into motion.

We all make choices everyday that impact our lives. I’ve met some of the greediest people in the world and some of the most giving. I know people who would sell their souls for eternal life and youth and people who would sell their souls to save a loved one from a tragic disease. It’s all about what we value because what we value is a reflection of ourselves.

Tyler: Drew, I understand college students are the main characters in “New Blood.” Why did you choose college-age main characters?

Drew: College is where most of us are free to make our own decisions for the first time. It is also the age where we still believe we are “invincible.” In this trilogy, Triton University is made up of the best and brightest students from around the world. More importantly, none of the students in attendance are there to fail. They will do almost anything to get ahead and be recognized as future leaders. Dr. Cohn preys upon this theory with deadly results.

Tyler: As I mentioned at the beginning, you have a great interest in martial arts. Would you tell us a little bit about that interest and why and how you used it in “New Blood”?

Drew: I fell in love with the martial arts when I was eight years old after watching a Chuck Norris movie. I’ve studied the martial arts since and have mastered every weapon I’ve laid my hands on. My favorite weapon is the Kama, which is best described as a modified version of a farming sickle with a shortened handle and blade. Two of the characters, who are brother and sister in “The Vampire Within Trilogy,” have extensive martial arts training. It is touched upon in “New Blood” and a modified Kama is also introduced, but the real value of this training will be put to the test in the third novel.

Tyler: Drew, when can your readers expect the third novel in the trilogy, and would you tell us its name and give us a little preview?

Drew: The third installment is called “The Vampire Within: Life Eternal” and will be available summer 2008. In “Life Eternal,” Justin and his group are forced to divide their efforts. One half of the group is headed to Romania to see if they can recover a pure DNA sample and the other half is staying in Triton City in the hope of stopping Dr. Cohn and his henchmen.

Tyler: What do you mean by a pure DNA sample? Are they seeking out an actual vampire–one of their predecessors? Is this where the serum came from, and do they expect this sample will cure them?

Drew: I don’t want to give too much of the third book away, but the band of good vampires has many reasons for seeking out a pure DNA sample. A little sneak peek is that those who already turned know that there is no turning back, but the question remains is there a way to keep those who haven’t been injected from being infected since it’s quite apparent the scheming mind of Dr. Cohn could have world-wide implications.

Tyler: Drew, what do you plan to write next? Will there be more vampire tales or will you concentrate on another genre?

Drew: There is a possibility of a follow-up trilogy called “The Vampire Unleashed,” and expanding the storyline to include werewolves.

Tyler: Thank you so much, Drew, for joining me today. Before we go, would you tell our readers your web site address and how they can purchase a copy of “New Blood”?

Drew: I invite everyone to check out my site at and email me with any questions. Both novels can be purchased at Dark Delicacies Bookstore, Borders, Target.com, Amazon.com and other online outlets.

Tyler:Thank you, Drew, and best of luck with your future books.

Honest and Inspiring Tale of NFL Athlete Tony Mandarich's Struggle With Addiction

March 14, 2009
My Dirty Little Secrets-Steroids, Alcohol & God: The Tony Mandarich Story
Tony Mandarich and Sharon Shaw Elrod
Modern History Press (2009)
ISBN: 9781932690781

Whether you are a football fan, someone concerned about addictions, or you just like a good success story, Tony Mandarich’s newly published memoir “My Dirty Little Secrets-Steroids, Alcohol & God” is a rewarding and eye-opening reading experience.

In 1989, after an incredible football career playing for Michigan State, Tony Mandarich was the number two draft pick for the NFL and chosen by the Green Bay Packers. Who could forget the picture of him on Sports Illustrated that spring, showing his incredible muscular build at 6’6″ and 315 pounds, and the declaration that he was “The Best Offensive Line Prospect Ever”? It looked like Tony might become the greatest NFL player ever. Tony was on top of the world!

But Tony had some dirty little secrets. For years he had been using steroids to increase his performance. He also had an addiction to alcohol and painkillers. He hid those secrets well, but in his memoir he now tells his complete story honestly, with all his mistakes and regrets laid bare for readers, not merely for sensation to sell books, but to show how he turned his life around and to give hope to others suffering from addictions.

While the media made insinuations about his steroid use during his career, and Tony admits to it, drugs and alcohol were what really caused his world to fall apart. His memoir depicts the extremes a person will take to hide and continue his addiction. Tony details how he cheated on drug tests so he could play in the Rose Bowl and other games, as well as how he tricked pharmacies and charmed doctors to write him out prescriptions for extra pills. At times, he even drove eight hundred miles round trip in a single day just to get pills so he could avoid withdrawal symptoms. Tony admits he was not sober a single day he played for the Green Bay Packers. The high expectations for his NFL career were more than he could handle. Then once his football career ended, he wasted the next three years doing nothing but living off his savings from his football days to feed his drug and alcohol addiction.

After watching his brother die, possibly from steroid use, and realizing how his addictions were destroying his family, Tony made a decision to turn his life around. He checked himself into a treatment center and never looked back, refusing to be in the majority of alcoholics who return to drinking. For years, Tony and his brother’s relationship had been strained. Even though he was with his brother when he died, Tony continued to feel guilt and shame about their relationship. One of the most tremendous moments in his memoir is the spiritual journey a friend led him upon, using a Native American tradition of meditation, where he was able to talk to his brother again; he realized his brother was his spiritual guide and would be there to help him everyday going forward. This heart-wrenching cathartic experience was a major turning point in Tony’s life and speaks to the importance of the addict healing emotional wounds along with becoming drug free.

The final section of the book reads like a celebration. Tony’s story would have been triumphant enough by simply describing how he overcame his addiction. But Tony went a step farther by returning to the NFL to play for the Indianapolis Colts. Without steroids, drugs, or alcohol, his performance was better than ever. He was the strongest player on the team, but he was also humble this time, looking to be a team player rather than a superstar. He stated at the time: “Benching 545 coming out of college didn’t help me pass-block…That’s the way I look at it. I just want to help this team.” Similarly, his memoir is not all about Tony Mandarich. It’s about how a person can right past wrongs and overcome addiction. It’s about one addict coming forward to tell his story, to raise awareness about addictions and how a 12-step program like Alcoholics Anonymous and trusting in God can turn a life around. It’s about Tony wanting to help others who have fallen to recover their lives and self-esteem. At the end of the book Tony states, “If this story has helped one of you to recognize that you need help, it was worth all the media controversy.” Tony Mandarich succeeded in his dreams of being an NFL player, but more importantly, “My Dirty Little Secrets” reveals that he has succeeded in being an incredible human being!

'Sky Flyers', a Fabulous Vacation Read by - Richard Mousseau, Moose Hide Books, Canada

Vacation Bliss! Sky Flyers By; Richard Mousseau

Wow, what a breath of fresh air and life!

Time magically slows down to a timely country pace circa 1910 in Mousseau’s latest masterpiece, “Sky Flyers’. A snapshot of rural northern Ontario life where a group of children rapture in warm summer days of amazing kite flying on the northern Georgian Bay shoreline. Ironically perhaps, this reviewer had the fortitude of curling up on dock lounge chair to read, adding to ambiance of story. Wide open shoreline sky lines expansive open farm land where two homemade kite’s dance and unwittingly set the stage for a life time of adventure, competition and camaraderie. A number of ingenuous attributes built into a variety of kites at the hands of children that would make a ghostly Leonardo Da Vinci proud.

Da Vinci’s inspiration in hand with childhood resourcefulness, Mousseau’s lovely slow pace style is reminiscent of Samuel Clemens a.k.a Mark Twain’s Huckeyberry Finn and the adventures of Tom Sawyer. Readers are taken on a wonderful journey as Mousseau carves new roads of wit and era culturalisms that set precedence for distinctive Canadian Literature. This fine novel comfortably stands in finer categories such as, Stephen Leacock’s ‘Sunshine Sketches Of A Small Town’.

Mousseau’s own rural northern Ontario life experience and boyhood giftedly shines through this wide range appeal page turner. A small rural northern Ontario multi-cultural community is ethno-demographic harmony in action via childhood summertime adventures. One life defining summer far from conscious thoughts children are free of class distinction, racism, poverty and other adult worldly dramas sets precedence for youth and adulthood.

From old hound dogs, to catching frogs, to tom boy girls and growing into youth and adulthood of war and post war, this novel and its characters live on long after its first reading. A measure of a true timeless classic in the making, Mousseau’s eloquent, brilliant, and witty this novel is simply a joy to read! For readers caught up in the high fever of box store trends, this masterpiece is a welcome change.

Every once in awhile, a shinning star writer shines and shares a gift for the written word and Sky Flyers is among memorable other works, such as; ‘Leave Me To Cry’, ‘Life Raft’, ‘Mr Cheeks Too Soft’, ‘On With The Show’, ‘Three Plays By Me’, ‘An Oak Rocking Chair’, ‘Ed’s Daily Quotes’, ‘Ed’s Daily Inspirations’, ‘Farm Facts From Dung Hill Farms’, ‘Herman The Hermits Poems Of Life’, ‘Just The Cook’s Trail-Side Gormet Cooking’, ‘Memories of 1896 The Adventures of Mr. Cheeks Too Soft and Kin’, ‘Pioneer Poetry of Mr. Cheeks Too Soft’, ‘Roosevelt Street’, ‘Steeltown’, ‘Steeltown Blues’, ‘Stories From My Time’, ‘Weathered Boards’, and more. As a seasoned and prolific writer, editor and publisher in his own right, Richard Mousseau demonstrates his expertise with numerous other works, such as; novels, story poetry, play writing and in particular, Northern Ontario adventures. A man of many hats, Mousseau also hails as a farmer a raising menagerie of domestic animals in rural Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada.

Congratulations Richard Mousseau!

Developing a National Drought Policy in Australia - Book Review

Australia just went through the worst drought in 50 years. Interestingly enough, their drought wasn’t any worse as a percentage of average rainfall as it was 50 years ago, but unfortunately they have a lot more people now all vying for the same amount of water. Some folks have blamed global warming, but it appears it was the El Nino cycle is what changed things. Luckily, the drought is over, however their problems with over water use remain.

Each time there is a Drought it will appear to be more severe due to the water usage. If you’d like to learn more about how Australia dealt with this incredible drought situation, then I’d like to recommend a very good book to you, a project I actually participated in, and gave commentary for;

“Consultations on National Drought Policy; Preparing for the Future – Drought Review Panel “ The Government of Australia, 2004.

The book describes the Australian government’s $1.2 Billion in Drought Assistance Program, and the importance for preparedness in the future due to climate variability, El Nino, and the cyclone season. This book is fully describes the regional and Social Impacts and why a National Drought Policy is paramount. It also describes future procedures for Drought Declarations and Alert Levels.

The Economics of Drought when there is a shortage of water there is also a drought in the business community. It obviously affects farming and agriculture, and that goes without saying, but it also affects nearly every industry. This is why water conservation is a key. It is my contention that the Australian government was very wise to be proactive in solving their problems and mitigating the drought situation. It is also my belief that every government should study this, because it is a blueprint for future success when calamity strikes. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this.

Photography Posing Secrets Review

If you have ever tried to take a picture where you have to pose the human body you would know how difficult it can sometimes be especially if you do not know how or what you have tried did not get the results you were looking for. Photography posing secrets is a book by Malcolm Boone which promises to show you how you can quickly and easily produce professional standard portraits by mastering the secrets of camera friendly poses. A lot of things has been said about this book, but her e is a review of what to expect from it.

The whole package comes with a main book which is 120 pages long and 4 other bonuses. Some of the things you would learn in the main book includes how to focus on the body to aid posing, what you need to do to duplicate or create any pose, the 3 basic movements of the head that make a difference to your models features and ten simple solutions you can use when your model does not know what to do with their hands.

The good thing about this book is that it shows you how to produce professional shots every time. Another good thing is that you can download it to your computer immediately after you pay for it which means that you do not have to wait for anything. The not so good thing is that it might take you some time to be able to master the methods taught in this book but as long as you are committed you should be ok.

All in all, photography posing secrets does look like a good book and if you are someone who is looking to improve his or her ability to produce expert shots, you might want to give this a try.

Must Read Investment Books

Maybe you want to be the next Warren Buffett or George Soros; or maybe you just want to get better returns on your retirement savings. In either case, there is a wealth of good books written about markets and investing. Here are some of the best.

I always recommend “A Random Walk Down Wall Street” by Burton G. Malkiel as a good place to start for anyone new to investing. It makes the case for the efficient market hypothesis in clear simple language that anyone can understand. Simply stated, the EMH says that it’s very difficult if not impossible for unleveraged investors to beat the market indexes on on a long term basis.

Needless to say, this is not what most of us want to hear. We’d all like to believe that with some diligent weekend reading we can turn our modest savings into millions. The overwhelming evidence suggests otherwise. For most investors, the best investments will be market index funds with low expense ratios.

Maybe you should just read Malkiel’s book and go put your money into some good index funds, but most people won’t be satisfied with that. The next stop on your investment journey should be Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor”. Graham was Warren Buffett’s idol and mentor. He was a finance professor at Columbia and had his own investment firm which achieved stellar results over a long period of time.

Graham was one of the first of the quants: quantitative analysts who invest on the basis of fundamental financial ratios combined with an analysis of market history. He believed in “cigar butt investing”, buying shares in companies with weak businesses but strong balance sheets. This approach may still have value in the world of small and microcap investing, but probably wont work for larger capitalization stocks.

In any case, “The Intelligent Investor” is good common sense introduction to investing. Graham takes you through the world of stocks, mutual funds, and bonds in plain language a layman can understand. The most recent edition of the books, with an introduction and annotation by Jason Zwieg is particularly good.

A third book that should be on any investor’s bookshelf is “One Up On Wall Street: How To Use What You Already Know To Make Money In The Market” by Peter Lynch. Lynch was the incredibly successful manager of the Fidelity Magellen mutual fund in the 1980′s. During his time at the helm, Magellen was the best performing diversified fund in the country.

Peter Lynch is and advocate of using your specialized knowledge to out-think the market pros. He believes that the specific knowledge that we possess can be employed to find companies with great long-term prospects that will thrive over time. In Lynch’s eyes, a trip to the mall or a new chain restaurant can be a scouting trip on the way to finding a great investment. The very companies that we love as consumers will become the great stock investments of tomorrow.

Proof Evident - Book Review

Proof Evident is a newly released crime fiction novel by lawyer and controversial psychologist, John Dicke. The story line is based around a criminal case for Judge Avery Jackson who coldly murdered Sheriff Hardacre during his speech to 150 city officials. The problem is, Mr. Jackson has no memory of the event at all…

Jack Maine leaves the public service and starts up a private practice with the assistance of his talented wife while taking on this difficult and seemingly doomed case. His dedicated and patient staff includes a master investigator and a phenomenal young novice lawyer – both of whom are fully aware they may not see a paycheck for some time. Jack’s nemesis is the quick-witted and well-financed defense team led by an ambitious attorney that is set on becoming “seen”. Death follows this case everywhere. Just when the lawyers feel they are getting somewhere – people start dropping like flies. Soon a CIA scandal is discovered that threatens national security, which powerful people are desperate to cover-up; meanwhile a drug ring threatens to take control of every aspect of the community.

John Dicke addresses the issue of pleading Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity, which is a much larger issue than I had previously been aware of. Even mentioning the plea will turn off a jury, who are hardened by the preconception that the plea is repeatedly used to falsely gain sympathy, and therefore, receive a lighter sentence for a crime they are guilty of committing.

John also shows the intense stress of an exhausting case, which can be exhilarating to intrigued lawyers bored with the mundane courthouse activities, and the temptations that could destroy those that have more desire than sense. Mr. Dicke uses elements of real life, historical events -including the government scandal.

It is my opinion that Proof Evident is a book for deep-thinking individuals who favor courtroom drama – because there is a lot of it. I found myself wanting to skip through those sections, but had I done so the ending would have left me shocked and baffled. I loved the eventful conclusion and was surprised by a few characters as well. Overall, I think John Dicke has created an interesting novel that deserves to be given a chance by readers of this genre.

Harry Potter Is Low Brow

In the modern day with increasing technology the literature that we read is not up to the standards set years ago. This is for many reasons. Most people cannot easily read high language that uses critical theories and devices. Now some many more things are being published after the printing press was invented. This has lead to a drastic wake left behind the great literature. Now many of the most popular books are from a simple idea and the author needs no skill to succeed.

The elaborate descriptions and not the intellectual depth was the reason each book in the series lasted longer than seven hundred pages. Children are raised in a modern time where they practically learn how to read from Harry Potter. Another reason for why Harry Potter was met with such success was J.K. Rowling’s use of religion and the natural to incite people around the world. The world that Rowling creates is a fictional one but it is set on the same planet we all live on.

The natural emotions that humans feel were also present. This allowed the reader to relate to the natural settings of a world filled with wizards. Those were the people incited for positive reasons by Harry Potter. Some people had an entirely different reading of Harry Potter, that J.K. Rowling was anti Christian and trying to brainwash the youth. A person would have to read Harry Potter as a non fictional account of history to believe something so asinine. This clearly is not the case yet national news was made time after time about parents or churches banning their children to read Harry Potter. Maybe J.K. Rowling took note of what Sprat said long before. She was able to create a work logical for easy sensible delights for the reader.

Leases & Rental Agreements by Marcia Stewart and Attorneys Ralph Warner & Janet Portman

Why start from scratch and reinvent the wheel all by yourself? If you are a landlord, regardless if you own one rental or many, there are a variety of forms and agreements you will need. “Leases & Rental Agreements” by Marcia Stewart and Attorneys Ralph Warner & Janet Portman is a Nolo publication that is billed as your lease and rental documents companion. It’s a good reference to get you started.

The first chapter is pretty short and is basically a ‘this is what this book can help with” intro with a list of 11 tips for being a successful landlord. Really not needed in a book of forms, but didn’t hurt. It was only a page.

Chapter two covers preparing a lease or rental agreement and walks you through most of the common clause you may wish to include. 25 clauses are covered, things like term of the tenancy, payment of rent, utilities, and pets. There is also a short segment on signing the lease or rental agreement. Good basic information to assist someone in forming their own agreement. You may wish to look over agreements you are using with this chapter to ensure you have covered everything you need to. There is a sample, fill in the blank form, that is also included on the accompanying CD.

Chapter three focuses on choosing tenants and contains information regarding advertising properties, accepting rental applications, references, and choosing applicants. There is a sample rental application that is also found on the CD, as well as some other forms.

Chapter four is titled Getting the Tenant Moved In and contains checklists for moving in, move-in letters, and a bit about organizing your tenant records. Pretty short chapter, but it does provide you a sample checklist to help you with making your own, or modifying the one they provide to fit your needs.

Chapter five is on changing or ending a tenancy and the forms and notices that go along with that. This is actually the last chapter and ends with page 105.

Appendix A contains State Landlord-Tenant Law Charts. I’m not sure why they put these here, except to lengthen the book a bit. I didn’t expect this in a form book. The charts tell you what code sections you’ll find the State law in, and then some very basic tid bits on the law. And one must remember that laws change, so before relying on what is included in this book, I’d suggest and demand that you look up the actual statues of your jurisdiction to ensure you have correct and up to date law.

Appendix B contains instructions regarding the forms on the CD.

Appendix C has Tear-Out Landlord Rental Forms for those that may not have access to a computer to be able to use the CD. They are also nice to have to use as samples to create your own. (Forms are also included in Spanish)

Some of the information in this book can be found in other Nolo titles with more detail. The law section in the Appendix is probably not needed. However, the sample forms, the instruction on the various clauses of the rental agreement, and having the forms on the accompanying CD is nice to have. As an attorney, I really like many of the books Nolo puts out. I think they do a very good job at accomplishing their goal to bring legal information to everyone. This book is a good reference, but not as compete as many of Nolo’s other titles. It will help you get started, but I strongly recommend you check your State statutes and not just rely on this text for State law, and once you have used this book to prepare your documents, it would be wise to have a professional review them for you to ensure you haven’t missed anything and to make sure you are compliant with all local laws and regulations.

Doc - The Rise and Rise of Julius Erving by Vincent M Mallozzi

I finished reading “Doc: The Rise and Rise of Julius Erving” by Vincent M. Mallozzi this last weekend and have to say that I really enjoyed reading it. It took me back to my younger days when I was one of Dr. J’s fans that tried my best to master finger rolling a basketball into the hoop because I couldn’t dunk. Dr. J was one of my all time favorite basketball players and still is. So, yes, I enjoyed reading the book.

The book really was written by a fan for fans. On the next to last page, the author writes, “It is a shame that Erving did not want to participate in this project (a number of calls went out to Erving’s representatives and to his ex-wife, Turquoise, and their children, but most were not returned), because this entire book is basically a giant Valentine from one of his biggest fans.” That sums it up pretty well, and what’s wrong with that? Dr. J, Julius Erving, had a legion of fans and I’m sure many will enjoy being taken back to those glory days just as I was.

Does the book shed light on things not already available? Probably not, but the author did a great amount of research and talking to people to pull it all together in one source. Are there inaccuracies? Maybe, but talk to anyone about anything that happened in the past and you’ll uncover inaccuracies. It happens.

The greatest part of the book focuses on Erving’s basketball career. From his beginnings, through the ABA to his retirement from the NBA. Mallozzi does a good job of describing the electrifying performances of the legendary Dr. J. Reading the book took me right back to when I first saw some of those dunks on television as they happened. Other stories made me wish the ABA games and street games in New York would have been recorded.

The last part of the book briefly covers some of the things that went on with Erving after his retirement. Much of this portion is not flattering or as heroic as his feats on the basketball court. There are snippets about the comeback one-on-one game he lost to Kareem, marital problems including illegitimate children, divorce, and his children’s troubles. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy reading this as much as I did about his fabulous dunks and the professionalism and poise he had playing the game and to those he played with. He was a childhood hero, and I enjoyed that part much better. Sure, I know he was human and had his faults. Don’t we all? I just enjoyed reading about the positive elements of his life better than the negative. I’m glad the author put them in the book, since they are part of who Julius Erving is, but I’m also glad that these elements were a small portion of the overall text.

If you are a fan of Dr. J., I’d recommend this book. If you want to learn a little history about a player that captured basketball like few others and is still considered to be one of the all time greats, check this book out. For me, I’m really glad I read it. It took me back and helped me relive some great memories of a boyhood basketball hero.

Why Can't We Get a Little Peace and Quiet in the World - I Ask - I Am Trying to Get Some Sleep!

After watching all the sound and fury in Egypt, along with all the commentary, TV, video showing chaos and controversy on nearly every news channel, it occurred to me that well, like you, I’d just like a little peace and quiet you know. Like leave me alone already. Interestingly enough, it is important to have quiet and peacefulness, and it is very important to the human biosystem. Everyone needs sleep and quiet and it effects us all at the cellular level whether we realize it or not.

In human societies you don’t need riots, protests, marches, shouting, or civil unrest with the throwing of tier-gas bombs, molotov cocktails, or sticks and rocks to break the peace, we have noise all around us every day, and it’s not healthy, not even a little bit. Think about it, airplane noise, train tracks, horns, machinery, kitchen equipment, air-conditioners, and motors from trucks, cars, motorcycles, and the like.

There is an interesting book on this topic that I’d surely like to recommend to you, the name of the book is;

“Technology for a Quieter America” By the Committee on Technology for a Quieter America; National Academy of Engineering, Washington DC, (2010), pages 216, ISBN: 978-0-309-15632-5.

This book really gets into the details of it all and makes some excellent points of what we can do to get a little peace and quiet. I am not talking about Library level quiet, but why not take down the decibels 10-20 points, as it could serve us all with better quality of life. In the introduction of the book, in fact, in the Executive Summary, in the very first paragraph it notes;

Exposure to noise (i.e., unwanted or potentially hazardous sound) at home, at work, while traveling, and during leisure activities is a fact of life for all Americans. At times noise can be loud enough to damage hearing, and at lower levels it can disrupt normal living, affect sleep patterns, affect our ability to concentrate at work, interfere with outdoor recreational activities, and, in some cases, interfere with communications and even cause accidents. Clearly, exposure to excessive noise can affect our quality of life.

It is my contention that it takes friction to make noise, and friction is energy, in fact, it is lost energy. If we design and build better equipment that does not make noise, we will automatically use less energy. That means less electricity use, and less fuel. This also means lower costs, and that equates to lower cost in everything we buy or use.

Think about this for a moment. And while we are at it, we should harvest the noise whenever it exists, perhaps using magnetic induction principles to collect vibrations to power up batteries for later use. Please consider all this and let’s hear about your inventions and innovations to reduce all this racket!

Why Can't We Get a Little Peace and Quiet in the World - I Ask - I Am Trying to Get Some Sleep!

Book Review - Roman: Unparalled Outrage by John William McMullen

In this current time of abuse scandals involving Catholic priests, it might not occur to some that accusations toward men of the cloth are not a recent development. The 1846 case of Father Roman Weinzoepfel illustrates this point, and Roman: Unparalled Outrage offers fictional account of the events of this young priest’s tragic life.

Though the Catholic population of the American midwest was small, the need for a community’s spiritual guidance outweighed the necessity of some priests’ complete training. Thus, Father Weinzoepfel’s installation as pastor of a small Catholic church in Evansville, Indiana was expedited, and this Alsatian found himself quickly having to adjust to pre-Civil War America in a time when immigrants (particularly the Irish and Germanic Catholics) were looked upon with suspicion. It is a discrimination Father Weinzoepfel feels immediately among various merchants (a scene depicting the newspaper editor’s determination that a Catholic festival is not newsworthy sticks out).

Nonetheless, the priest finds acceptance among his own flock, and comes to be acquainted with the Long family, to whom Father administers the dying matriarch Last Rites. The father, Louis, appears to be devout yet is an overbearing patriarch, particularly when it comes to his wayward daughter, Anna. When Anna shocks the family by marrying outside the Faith, the priest tries to make the situation bearable by ensuring the future Catholicity of Anna’s children. However, it is Anna who makes the situation unbearable for Father Weinzoepfel when she, distraught that he has refused her advances, accuses him of rape. Unparalled Outrage takes the reader through a fictional account of the trial, the ensuing anti-Catholic sentiment that plagued the town, and Father Weinzoepfel’s fate, the outcome of which might have differed had he given in to the temptation to break the seal of the confessional.

Author McMullen offers with Roman: Unparalled Outrage an interesting historical perspective on religious intolerance in early America, a timely read despite its setting. Long, awkward stretches in the narrative, coupled with constant shifting of time (as much of Roman’s story is told in flashback), however, interrupt the otherwise smooth
flow of the story.

Raw Foods Detox Diet - Free Book Review

I like to call the Raw Foods Detox Diet the simplest revolution to transform the diet world of our generation. No point, calorie, or carb counting. No club membership fee, no pills to buy, no crazy eating-then-stopping, or anything else to distract you from healthy weight loss. We’re just getting back to basics here, folks.

Natalia Rose has been a certified clinical nutritionist in New York City for years. She has and still does work with models, actors, and media personalities to help them stay fit for the camera. During that time, she has made amazing discoveries and breakthroughs to help everyone get healthy, lose weight and keep it off, find beautiful skin again, and gain more energy. In her book, “The Raw Food Detox Diet”, she gives the public insight on what she has been telling models and actors for years. The book takes you through all the ins and outs of the Raw Food Diet, as well as how to safely transition into it. She answers many questions that people have been asking her, and makes it as easy as humanly possible for someone to change their life and their health.

I started the Raw Foods Diet in January, but still bought this book as I felt I needed some help and pointers because my food choices seemed to be getting too repetitive. Her five step plan certainly revitalized my dieting practice, and I can see how it can help anyone from those just beginning to those who’ve already started but get lost along the way.

The great thing is you have the comfort of knowing that you are reading information by someone who knows her stuff, yet it is written in such a way that you don’t have to be a scientist to understand it. I like things put to me in clear, simple terms I can remember without a dictionary, and I believe the book accomplishes that very well.

Simply put, I have and will continue to recommend this diet to everyone I know. Now that I’ve read this book, I will recommend it as the best place to start and keep up the motivation! Since this is a review, I’ll say I would give it four stars out of five.

It Was You, All Along - By Gary Spinell

Steps to Self Realization

Gary Spinell writes openly of his journey from low self esteem and self confidence in his book “It Was You, All Along.” Gary tells how he created change and the life he desired by acquiring new beliefs and traits by learning to release positive energy.

The book demonstrates that individually we have the power to make our life become whatever we want it to be and that our world is comprised, created and built by the energy of our thoughts, words and actions.

Part I summarizes how American society and culture over the last 50 years have impacted our belief systems. The depression of the 1930s, the generation of baby boomers, women coming into the work force, and the new age of technology are all examples of this impact. Spinell discusses how impatience, discrimination, the quick fix, the concept of suing, and the lack of assuming individual responsibility are all a result of society’s influence.

Part II introduces five universal laws and ten key steps that will help you discover how to create the world of your desire and your own reality. I enjoyed the format of the book which highlights significant points and tips. These short synopsis statements and a natural lead paragraph into the next chapter are helpful as they enable the reader to quickly assimilate and retain key points. Spinell challenges the reader to approach their journey with a feeling of curiosity and anticipation.

Gary uses personal examples of applying the universal laws and the dynamic forces at work in the world to create his desired reality. The eight action steps to becoming a person of high esteem were especially helpful. Gary relates his experiences in a candid yet positive approach which allows the reader to identify, empathize, and emulate Gary’s success principles.
Spinell’s own example demonstrates the success of his formula for inner strength and personal growth. “It Was You, All Along” is a powerful illustration of the importance of resolve, determination, and conviction. It is a practical straightforward guide for attaining success, inner peace and happiness.

It Was You, All Along - By Gary Spinell

A Review of the Latest Bernie Gunther Novel, Field Grey by Scottish Author Philip Kerr

Like many Gunther fans I was chomping at the bit to read it for this series marries my near obsession of all things World War 2 with hardboiled detective fiction. Bernie Gunther is a brilliantly drawn, flawed character whose story is played out in Nazi Germany, The Ukraine during the war, POW camps as well as post war Austria, Argentina, Cuba, France and Germany. Kerr is able to evoke the period so well, so cinematically, and his ability to weave fiction with real life events and characters really makes for a cracker of a yarn.

When the original trilogy was completed in the early 90s I was devastated for great thriller series don’t come around too often, even less so historical thrillers. Anyway my disappointment was displaced because Kerr went back to the series in 2006 and since then we’ve had four more novels. Another one, Prague Fatale, is apparently due out in the Autumn.

Field Grey differs in one key area from all the others in the series; there is no murder to solve. Rather, in this novel, Kerr concentrates on delving into the murky wartime past of Gunther himself, times that were merely brushed over in previous novels. The vehicle for this probe into his past is the story of Erich Mielke, a communist who Gunther saved from a beating by SA thugs in Berlin, who went on to murder two policemen, Paul Anlauf and Franz Lenck, in 1931 and eventually became head of the Stasi in post-war East Germany. A perfect example of how Kerr weaves Gunthers fictional life into the lives of real life characters.

The novel kicks off in sunny Cuba in 1954 with Bernie, ex-Kripo detective, reluctant SS member, wanted war criminal and unwilling spy for Cuban intelligence – he has to spy on Meyer Lansky, the Mafias accountant, who controlled the gambling concessions in Cuba under the Batista, regime – feeling increasingly vulnerable and tired of being on the run. He decides to escape by boat to Haiti however his departure is ill – timed and he’s intercepted by the US Navy. After time in Guantanamo prison he’s passed onto US intelligence. From New York he’s flown back to Berlin and exhaustively interrogated about his war time activities in France and the Ukraine. It is then that we start to learn of Bernies wartime activities and the atrocities he was part of on the Eastern front. As a result of the interrogations he is given a clear choice: help French intelligence identify a wanted war criminal or go on trial and face the consequences. Always the pragmatist, Bernie once again becomes the pawn in a larger game as his past catches up and threatens to overwhelm him.

However this plot device only serves to open up the unheard story of Bernies’ wartime experience and his relationship with Erich Mielke. It has all the bravado of previous books, the set pieces make for great reading and, as with the entire series, you find yourself immersed in the lifes of the characters and the history of the time. For someone like me this tension between fiction, fact and history is the singular achievement of these novels and Field Grey does not disappoint. Philip Kerr has done his research and although clearly exhaustive it is worn lightly on every page.

If you haven’t read any of the books in the series I urge you to do so. Now. You don’t have to start with ‘March Violets’ (his first one) just be sure you read them all. They make for perfect holiday reading. Especially on a gloomy, wet day when you don’t have to make an excuse to stay in and can instead curl up on the couch and jump straight into war torn Europe

How the Mighty Fall - A Review

Lately it isn’t uncommon to see a story in the news about another failed company or one that is in its death throes. There are just as many reports claiming to explain why these companies have failed. Some may be right, some wrong, but I doubt any have done the research and study that has produced Jim Collin’s latest offering, How the Mighty Fall and Why Some Companies Never Give In.

I must confess that I did not get around to reading Collin’s From Good to Great until fairly recently and while I found that book to be well researched and full of terrific information, I was troubled by two of his “great” companies; Circuit City and Fannie Mae. Circuit City had gone bankrupt and out of business by the time I read the book and Fannie Mae, well, you know. So, I was pleased to see How the Mighty Fall would address these companies.

But, Fannie Mae and current economic issues are not the purpose of the book. In fact, Collins specifically mentions in the Preface that he purposefully avoided the 2008 financial situation. Instead, the book stems from his own “curiosity about why some of the greatest companies in history, including some once-great enterprises we’d researched for Built to Last and Good to Great, had fallen.”

Though it’s nice to keep a positive outlook, especially in today’s environment, study of failure is important too, if only to try to avoid other’s mistakes. Collin’s research revealed five stages of decline: Hubris born of Success, Undisciplined Pursuit of More, Denial of Risk and Peril, and Capitulation to Irrelevance or Death. Of course, as is mentioned, such things as fraud can also result in a company’s demise, but these five stages are a good framework for studying how failure happens.

It’s interesting to note that companies that found themselves in stage 1 and stage 2 did not seem to realize they were starting down the path to doom. Circuit City was a “great” company in 1997 but Collin’s more recent study indicates it had already entered the second stage of decline by then and had ignored the come-from-behind success of its primary rival Best Buy.

Unfortunately, my discomfort with Fannie Mae being listed as a “great” company in Good to Great was not eased by How the Mighty Fall, though perhaps Fannie Mae is an example of the sort of decline Collins mentions that doesn’t fit his model. There were plenty who were uncomfortable with both Fannie Mae and its sister Freddie Mac by the time they achieved their “greatness.” In fact, a 1997 article in the New York Times reported on increased concerns within some government circles. The fact is that Fannie Mae was and is subject to many influences from government that other companies do not (until recently anyway) experience. Reporting seems to indicate that both their rise and fall had a lot to do with political influence and maneuvering, all probably fitting the description of Stage 1; hubris. To his credit though, Collins does not include Fannie Mae in the study, citing the recency of the surrounding events. He does include a somewhat incomplete analysis in an appendix.

Collin’s portrayal of stage 5 is a little depressing — for good reason. His research shows that once a company enters that stage, it doesn’t recover. There are two manifestations of that failure. First is the company that gives up and dies. The other is the company that fights on in an effort that might have been successful earlier but is futile at this stage. This inescapable death spiral serves well to demonstrate the importance of early recognition of the preceding stages.

As we’ve come to expect from a Collins offering, How the Mighty Fall is very well documented and the research is presented in a series of appendices containing a wealth of information about how the study and comparison companies were chosen. As a refreshing conclusion, Collins presents the case of three companies, IBM, Nucor, and Nordstrom who were in decline but were able to recover. Though his examples are a bit dated (the data is a few years old), the companies presented are still doing pretty well as of this writing (I checked).

Collins makes a significant comparison with the principles laid out in Good to Great. In fact, he shows that failing to follow those principles is how companies can progress through the five stages of decline. Again, he places heavy emphasis on leadership being a steady hand at the wheel and not a reactionary superstar: an important lesson for all leaders at all levels.

If you haven’t read Good to Great, you might want to before reading How the Mighty Fall. It isn’t essential though as Collins provides a summary in the appendix. In fact either way, read Appendix 7 first and you’ll be up to speed. But don’t wait too long to read the book. If you’re in stage one or two, you’ll want to know that now.

How the Mighty Fall - A Review

Paranoia by Joseph Finder

Any story that starts off with a disgruntled cubicle dweller has got me on page one. I can relate even though those days are behind me. Paranoia by Joseph Finder hooked me and kept me hanging It’s a timely story of corporate espionage that’s hard to put down.

Adam Cassidy works at Wyatt Telecom, a tech corporation but like slackers everywhere his big ambition is to do the least amount of work without getting caught. He wants a better job but he doesn’t want to work. One day he reallocates company funds for an unauthorized retirement party and corporate security doesn’t see it as the harmless prank he meant it to be. Adam is suddenly facing termination, a lawsuit and maybe even criminal charges. He’s given a choice – go to prison or infiltrate a rival tech company as a corporate spy. The choice is clear. Adam is given a false work history, trained and told what to look for. He goes to work for Trion Systems, rises in the ranks and doubles his salary. There’s just one problem, Adam likes his new job and doesn’t want to spy anymore. But he has some powerful enemies and soon he doesn’t know who he can trust.

Paranoia is an intense page-turner, a steep, curving rollercoaster ride of a read. The characters are flawed and believable. Written in first person, Finder takes you inside Adam’s head as he struggles with his life, love and relationships. There’s some violence and foul language, there’s also some intense situations and twists. I loved it. Two thumbs up.

The 4-Hour Body by Timothy Ferriss

I saw the hype and the loads of reviews appearing on Amazon and wondered if the book was that great, or if it were just an awesome promotion and advertising campaign. I then thumbed through “The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide To Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman” by Timothy Ferriss in the bookstore and ascertained that it did have some information that looked interesting and useful. However, with the index finishing at page 571, I knew I would not be able to work it into my reading list right away, so I figured I’d wait to purchase it later. I then sort of put it out of my mind until seeing it on the grab n go shelf at the library. So I grabbed it, and am glad I did. It is one I will add to my personal library. While the entire book is not for everyone, and it is aimed more at men, I think many will find sections of this book quite useful.

I really like the concept of the book. Ferriss used himself to experiment with a variety of concepts related to the human body, or more accurately, his human body. He believes that by focusing on your body, you will also develop yourself as a whole. Something I agree with. You improve your inner game by improving your outer game. And this book is the result of his experimentation, on himself, to develop his body to the utmost. One would not do everything in this book simultaneously, and many people won’t do everything in this book, I know I wont. However, for certain areas, the information is worth looking into and following, and I think we all should experiment with ourselves in the quest to become the best we can become.

There is an introduction, and then some basics on losing fat. This might be what most people will want out of this book. From there, there are additional chapters on fat loss and adding muscle. These areas are controversial, and that is why there are so many different books proposing various theories and so on. Ferriss explains how it worked for him and others, and cites the references used, both written and the experts he consulted in person. (He does this for everything in the book, and that is one thing that impressed me. The book is well researched and he consulted many outstanding experts in their fields.)

Besides the fat losing and muscle building chapters, there are chapters on improving sex (If explicit drawings of female anatomy offend you, you will not like these chapters), perfecting sleep, reversing injuries, running faster and farther, getting stronger, swimming faster and longer, and living a longer and better life. There are also some interesting things in the appendices and extras, especially the articles on spotting bad science. There are also numerous supporting videos and related matter at his website. The book refers to you web pages on his site and others to support or illustrate with video the things he’s teaching. Many of the ideas are not original, and you will find in alternative sources. Additionally, not all of the suggestions, routines, etc. will work for everyone, nor are they all proven or necessarily safe. So each reader must use some common sense when reading any book of this type, and never believe one source absolutely for everything. Ferriss himself says that his research, using only himself, does not meet the criteria of scientific method research and some will slam him for it. So don’t take everything in this book as gospel, and don’t believe all the hyped up claims. Remember, nothing is THAT good.

Ferriss writes in an entertaining and conversational style. It is like you are sitting over a meal and he’s explaining what he did to himself, why, and what happened. (Though from some of the ways he’s eaten, I’d want to know what experiments he was engaged in before going to eat.) It’s an enjoyable book, and interesting book, and one that made me think about my own eating, training, and how I keep track of what things are doing to my body, and how I’m advancing in areas. I’m not going to do everything in this book, but I am going to try some of the exercises and strategies he suggests to see what they do for me. It’s a book I’m glad I finally picked up and read, and I’m looking forward to trying some of the things I learned in it. I recommend anyone interested in health, fitness, and their body to take a look at it too and use what is useful.

Camera Dollars eBook - Learn to Make Extra Dollars With Only a Camera

If you are looking for an easy way to make money online there are thousands of websites out there that claim to help you. But, you do need to be careful when you are registering for these sites since many of them, simply put, are scams.

One site that I have found that is much different from the rest is Camera Dollars. Instead of online surveys, marketing, or any of the other common ways to make an income stream online, this system only involves photography.

You begin this program by ordering the incredibly helpful eBook (and the price is not too shabby) from Brian Moore. Moore is a professional photographer and has been working in the online market for years. He recently made this program to help people like you find a way to make some extra dough without having the trouble of working two jobs.

The eBook begins with a tutorial on photography, although I must mention that you do not need to be an expert photographer for this system to benefit you. As long as you have a digital camera, then this program will work for you. Anyway, the eBook begins with beginners tips on photography and moves along into more advanced tips on how to make your photos look more professional. In no time you will be able to make some really nice looking pictures.

The second part of Moore’s program deals with marketing your photos. Camera Dollars is a program that can help you find TONS of places to sell your photos. Moore gives you a list of advertisers, web designers, and real people that will pay for your photos. As long as people are making websites, they will always want pictures to go with them, so you will never be out of a job. The program works for everybody quite nicely, and the eBook is really easy to follow along with, despite being over 100 pages long.

The two most common questions about the Camera Dollars program are “Is it hard?” and “Will I make money?” These are good questions to ask and I will answer them for you.

As for it being hard, don’t worry about that. The eBook is incredibly helpful and makes this easy for anyone. You don’t need anything but a camera. Also, you can work whenever you want. You can do this for a few hours a day or once a week and it will still help you.

As for the money question, that depends on how much you do. This is not some “get rich overnight” scam, and there is some work involved. You will not be making millions of dollars in one week doing nothing. But, if you try hard and do what the eBook instructs you to do, you can easily add to your income. With time you may even be able to quit your day job, but at first it will obviously not be as much. This program won’t make you a millionaire, but it will put a lot more cash in your wallet.

If you want to try this program but are worried about the cost of the eBook, then don’t be. You can try it for less than $40 and if you aren’t happy you can have a FULL refund. I recommend trying the program at least for a while, and once you see how much money you are making, you won’t regret your purchase.

Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family By Condoleezza Rice

Like there are varieties of fascism, there are varieties of Condoleezza Rice – that is, there are many diverse dimensions of her life. And so to start considering her life through memoir writing you have to pick some spot to concentrate on. It will be quite clumsy indeed to sit down and try to write a full memoir of Condi’s Life in one book. You can but it will be clumsy. And so it is necessary to focus on one particular area.

This is what had happened to Condoleezza Rice herself recently. In writing a memoir about herself, she chose to focus on that aspect of life that sustained her as black child in Birmingham Alabama where the atmosphere was choked with hatred against black people. The aspect is that; as an ordinary person nothing can stop you to become extraordinary.

“My parents and the whole black community in the area demonstrated to me that you might not be able to control your circumstances but you could control your responses to the circumstances. And the best armor against everything around you was to be well educated, to work hard – to be twice as good as you could be”.

The title of the book Extraordinary Ordinary people attest to this kind of view Condi embraced at an early age, being raised as a black child and then become the secretary of state. This is a monumental testimony of an ordinary person becoming extraordinary.

It was William James, the father of modern psychology who said: “most people live – whether physically, intellectually or morally – in a very restricted circle of their potential being. We all have reservoirs of life to draw upon, of which we do not dream”. And he is right.

Myself a black person growing up in the segregated apartheid South Africa, where as black people we were daily kicked and called all sorts of names from monkey to baboon I know the experience that if an average despised and downtrodden person can realize how extraordinary he or she truly is, that person will be astonished that it is not about the other person who hates you and despise you, it is what is what is inside of you that counts. And so Condi in this book deliberately offers these lessons to people who had her similar experiences.

As President Barack Obama says: “It’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.”

It is also just as Michael Jordan says in his book Driven From Within: No one knew what I was capable of scoring, and no one tried to define me by putting a number on those expectations. No one had in mind what would be acceptable for me. After the first year, the expectations came, but by then I had positive habits. I had built a foundation for my game, so it wasn’t a surprise to me. I understood that the reason I was getting attention was because of the work I had put in up to that point, not because of what I had done to meet other people expectations of me.”

I once read Michele Obama’s much talked about Princeton thesis titled “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community”. In the thesis Michelle Obama wrote that after completing her degree she wants to be a source of inspiration for black people who are struggling. “Extraordinary Ordinary People” book is written on the same lines; it will inspire and lift up the lives of many people with Condi’s elegant intelligence, strong values, and devotion to family.

“This book is the story of the triumph of a family and its values and a little community that believed that even though you might not be able to afford a hamburger, you could still become the president of the United States if you want to be” – Condoleezza Rice

Review - The Friday Night Knitting Club By Kate Jacobs

This is a “chick” book and I loved it. If you’re twenty-two or seventy-two, you will find yourself reflected back in the characters of this book. Each character has there own separate voice that sometimes, as in life, strays from the ideal we each set in our minds…

Actually this is my favorite part of the book…viewing the prism each character interprets their experience and how this certain prism impacts the “truth.” We see the surface of behaviors and then pull back the curtain to discover “the hurts” driving each character.

While I read, I was reminded that each of us can only view the other in part, much is hidden. It is the hidden parts that must be revealed and brought out into the light for peace to be found…As in the main character Georgia’s stubborn, proud attitudes that kept her from opening letters her lover’s, James, sent years before. How often to do each of us create upsetting events, even words in our minds that never come to pass?

These characters are sometimes frustrating in their self-sabotage, but isn’t that the truth of it? Isn’t each of us truly our own worst critic? Judge and jury? Making assumptions based on our own fears and hurts instead of stepping back and viewing the full picture.

What helps to soften the self-sabotage is humor. The book is funny and insightful. The characters often poke fun at their own faults and of each other too. It feels very natural and human.

Best of all, this book of complicated emotions and behaviors doesn’t end with your traditional happy ending. Like life, it’s good and bad…and even sometimes, seemingly unfair. Happy reading!

Book Review - Wildfire by Nelson de Mille

Nelson de Mille is, without doubt, a MASTER story teller. He is among my favorite authors. I can honestly say that I don’t think that I have read any of his many books that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed.

I started several years ago with a book called “Plum Island.” It introduced me to de Mille’s two prime characters, namely Detective John Corey, a street-wise, smart-mouthed, ex-police officer and FBI Agent, Kate Mayfield.

De Mille has several sub-characters who also run through some of his books like Ted Nash, an obnoxious, in-your-face antagonist, also an FBI agent, but Corey and Mayfield are the main two.

In Wildfire, de Mille writes about – you guessed it… terrorism, the word on everybody’s lips, unfortunately. But it is a terrorist plot with a twist. It involves a plan to eradicate all Muslim based countries on the premise of… well, I can’t tell you. You’ll have to read it for yourself.

Wildfire is a medium paced novel. It’s not like “The Lion’s Game,” also featuring Corey and Mayfield and Nash.

What I particularly like about Wildfire, and indeed most of de Mille’s novels, is the development of his characters. Corey is a thoroughly lovable larrikin who is never short of some wise-ass thing to say, even when he is in dire peril. So many of his snide remarks make me laugh. In fact, I often read them several times because I find them so utterly amusing.

In Wildfire, it would seem that Mayfield is starting to catch Corey’s “disease” by virtue of their recent marriage to each other. Either that or de Mille just loves making these comments so often that he has begun to share them between the couple. Either way, it works well.

In my opinion, it would be more enjoyable for readers to follow these characters in the order of the books written. These are:

  1. Plum Island (1997)

  2. The Lion’s Game (2000)

  3. Night Fall (2004)

  4. Wildfire (2006)

This would enhance your enjoyment of the characters because you will be able to assemble their history in your mind. However, any and all novels can be read as stand alone stories.

Now… to my score. I should let you know that I am a very critical and discerning reader. Books that do not captivate me simply remain unread. I have a rather large stack of them. Knowing that only makes my score for this novel all the more complimentary. Wildfire gets from me a 9.5 out of 10. In a single word – outstanding!
