Book Review - The Broadband Connection

Software developers/programmers should learn the art of effective communication in order to succeed in their profession. They should know what to do and what not to do while speaking at technical meetings, presentations, internal and informal meetings. Allan Carroll in his latest book, The Broadband Connection, has outlined all the important techniques which need to be followed while delivering a presentation. At first I thought the book deals with broadband internet. But upon careful examination, I was amazed to see how the author has covered the nuances for delivering a successful presentation in a step-by step way.

The author initially examines the various methods involved in public speaking including the important rules to be followed before, on and after the day of speaking. I noticed that Alan narrates his real world experiences when he visited various countries/places in Page 37. The remaining chapters explain the key aspects such as structure of the conversation, managing resistance, conscious awareness.

I very much liked the chapter which points out the various aspects involved in the art of questioning. In addition, you will also learn how to successfully create a cordial atmosphere with the audience at various situations. For instance, if you turn to Page 149, 150 and 151 the author has narrated sample conversations which you can easily modify as per the circumstances.

The book also includes a glossary which enlists the meaning of various words. I don’t see any relation of these words with public speaking but some of them do have a meaning. The author also provides a bibliography with related reference books.

I feel that majority of the techniques discussed in the book can only be mastered by experience if you dn’t have this book in your hand. I would suggest the author to include URLs of those websites which provide information related to presentation and public speaking. The book is an essential reference guide for all those who are involved in public speaking. Experienced speakers can refine their knowledge by following the tips mentioned in the book.
