Vampire Academy Book 2 - Frostbite

Frostbite is the second book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. In this book she does a great job at advancing the characters, and developing the story. The plot revolves around the Lissa and Rose, and is told from Rose’s point of view. Rose is a Dhampire, who is in training at St. Vladimir’s Academy to become Lissa’s guardian. Dhampire’s are trained to guard Moroi Vampires against Strigoi Vampires. I won’t go too much into this, because I am assuming that if you are looking into the second book you already know a little about the story from the first book. Although you can read this book before the first one, I would recommend reading any series in order.

Anyway, in this book St. Vladimir’s Academy, as well as a couple of powerful Royal Moroi families have been attacked by organized groups of Strigoi, and the head of the school along with parents of the students have gone into a panic. They decide to move the students to a Ski Lodge for the winter break to ensure the children’s safety.

While at the lodge, Rose has to overcome many obstacles, such as her Mother being invited to help protect the students while at the ski lodge. I like Rose’s Mother, and the tension between the two is apparent during every encounter of theirs.

One of my favorite additions in this book is the character Adrian. A Royal Moroi, who has ties to some of the most powerful Royal Families in the Moroi community. He is sneaky, sly, mysterious, and I find him oh so appealing. Adrian has a thing for Rose, but she is so set on Dimitri that she doesn’t give him the time of day, which I find sad, because Adrian is one of my favorite characters.

The real plot thickens perfectly when Mia, Eddie and Mason leave the school (ski lodge) to go after the Strigoi that killed Mia’s parents. Mia’s parents worked for one of the Royal Families that the Strigoi attacked and they did not survive, an Mia wants revenge. Eddie and Mason want to prove themselves to be strong warriors and agree to help Mia get revenge.

Rose finds out that Mason, Mia, and Eddie have left the school and she tries to leave the lodge to retrieve them. It isn’t long after she finds them that they are all caught and help prisoner by Strigoi. While is captivation Eddie is fed off of, until he is just barely alive anymore. But Rose and Mason come up with a plan to escape. When they are just about free Mason is killed by a powerful Strigoi, and Rose in a fit of anger and rage destroys the two Strigoi with the help of Mia and her ability to wield water. Just as the fight is ending the schools guardian’s as well as Rose’s Mother find them, and help get them to safety.

The Strigoi Rose kills is believed the be the ring leader of the other Strigoi that attacked the school and the other Royal Families, and it is also believed that with him being dead the attacks would also stop. With this belief the children return to the school and everything goes back to normal…. at least until next time:)

Overall, I liked this book much more than I liked the first book. I think they characters were very well developed, and knowing their backgrounds helped me to get into the story. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an affliction to Vampire Books.
